what I am and am not buying

Filed under: baseball cards — morineko @ 1:59 pm

Not buying: Much of anything. I have lots of radon in my basement, which is going to cut into my already-limited paper object buying abilities.

But, really, you probably want to know what cards I’m consciously not buying other than ridiculously overpriced hobby boxes with only 100 base cards. I’m not buying 2008 Topps Updates and Highlights. No, it’s not because of gimmicks. It’s because, as far as I know, there still is no Seth McClung card in the set. I admit to having odd player collections, all right?

What I did buy: These, which are exactly the right size to hold the various Topps mini releases from the past few years (2008 Allen & Ginter, etc.) I haven’t actually ordered from the Storables site–I bought these at the Edina store–so I can’t attest to online customer service.

  1. that’s a neat idea… I’ll have to try to find some of those.

  2. A fellow Twin Cities collector, huh? I’ve only lived here for a year and have found only one card shop – Uncommon in Richfield. Really like it, but they don’t seem to get much in. Are there any other good shops up here that I just haven’t found yet? (Please don’t tell me Field of Dreams at MoA – I’m not a fan of that place).

    Who/what do you collect? Maybe we could work out a trade… look me up at epslette AT hotmail DOT com

  3. Welcome, Eric! I like Uncommon a lot too except that it’s a bit far away from me–the last time I was there was when I was visiting a friend in south Minneapolis, and the time before that was on the way back from CONvergence in July…if I’m only getting out there because of sf cons, well.

    There’s a shop in Roseville in the mall on the corner of Hamline and Woodhill. I didn’t know about it until last week because the counter guy at Source Comics mentioned it when I was buying card boxes there (they sell CCGs, and I’ve had a comics & manga pull with them since 1998–much recommended for St. Paul area comics shops.) I can’t remember the name of the store, though, because they fail at being in the phone book. I also didn’t buy anything there because I was just curious about the existence of the shop! Lots of hockey, some loose junk wax packs, etc.

    If you’re looking for vintage, The Ballpark on County 42 in Apple Valley is pretty good. He’s got some newer singles but he isn’t actively acquiring new stuff, and the owner also sells other sorts of vintage sports ephemera (magazines, programs, yearbooks, postcards, etc.) …I just hope it’s still open, I haven’t been there for about 8 months ^^;;;
